Repacking Your Aga

Your Aga is designed to product heat, retain heat in the ovens and hobs and as a by-product, radiate heat into the room. To do this effectively it must be properly built (& we see some terrible examples of this) and properly insulated.

Traditional Agas are insulated with loose fill vermiculite insulation. Vermiculite is a naturally occurring product used in a range of applications, from improving soil for propagation, to wall insulation and packaging. It expands when hot and therefore is well suited to insulating Agas internally, spilling into the nooks and crannies of the internals. Over time, vermiculite can settle and break down leaving voids within the Aga. If poorly packed initially, areas of the Aga may be without proper insulation. As the vermiculite ages, its expansion properties can begin to reduce as the flakes crumble - much like cereals dropping to the bottom of the packet! This can leave a void beneath the top plate. In the worst cases, even the barrel can be partially exposed.

The vermiculite is topped with rockwool, loft style insulation; this too can degrade over time. Insulation has progressed a great deal in recent years and modern alternatives offer far superior insulative properties. Today’s controllable Agas are insulated with ceramic fibre insulation blanket. This is the same material used in industry to insulate kilns and furnaces. It withstands exceedingly high temperatures and does not break down. This offers an ideal upgrade for rockwool in a modern world where energy saving is key. Cheaper versions of these products can be carcinogens. We therefore use a higher cost water soluble product.

If your Aga is over 10 years old or was poorly installed, it is well worth considering a repack.

With the current focus on energy prices and efficiency, we are all keenly aware of the importance of properly insulating our homes. It is rarely worth upgrading a home heating system, without first addressing the windows and insulation. A well insulated property requires less energy to heat and the same is true of your Aga. By improving your insulation your burner or elements' workload will be lessened and your fuel usage will be reduced. A repack is one of the most cost effective ways to improve the efficiency of your Aga.

In addition, a poorly insulated Aga will leak heat into areas it is not needed. By ensuring insulation is at its optimum, the heat will stay where it is wanted - in your ovens and hobs, resulting in better heat retention and reducing temperature drops whilst cooking. The fuel you use will be positively directed - to produce the heat you need for cooking and to keep your ovens hotter for longer; saving energy and improving the Aga experience!

Our repacks take just a few hours and can result in long lasting benefit to your cooking and your wallet. We will improve the vermiculite throughout, tightly pack and add a high performance ceramic fibre blanket.

Agas we can re pack - Oil, Gas, Solid Fuel, 13 Amp (please note pre 1974 Agas may carry an additional cost due to the potential presence of fullers earth).

Agas we can’t re pack - 30 Amp, DC, TC, Electrickit and eControl. These Agas are already fully insulated with ceramic blanket.
